See How My Garden Grows

September 12, 2019 MissWattson Leave a Comment

I don’t know about the silver bells or cockle shells of nursery rhyme fame (though I’m sure the shells would be good for adding minerals to the soil), but my garden grew well this summer. From cherry tomatoes to lettuces, tarragon, oregano, laksa leaf, holy basil, dill, chamomile, anise hyssop, swiss chard, carrots, sweet peas, shelling peas, pole beans, green beans, yellow beans, green sorrel, red-veined sorrel, spinach, regular basil, parsley, radishes, beets, ground cherries and raspberries. We even planted a saskatoonberry tree. No fruit this year on that one, but that was expected.

We fertilized more, added more olla pots (we still need more!) and moved our trellis to the front of the garden to give some shade to the plants behind (it’s a full sun area). The ground cherries were abundant. One raspberry bush is still going, but the other gave a handful of berries and closed up shop in July. One swiss chard went crazy while another on the other side of the garden is only now perking up. And we moved the sage bush into the area where nothing was growing and it seems to be fine. It’s a soldier. Along with the anise hyssop, it’d take over the garden if I let it, which I won’t. The horseradish from three years ago is still trying. We’re waging a war, the horseradish and I, but I have the sage on my side for now. We’ll see where its loyalties lie.

Here are the photos.

This chamomile tried to escape the confines of my community garden plot. I transplanted it back in. The tea is lovely.

We planted a tree! It’s a local amélanchier, or saskatoonberry tree. We got it through “Un Arbre Pour Mon Quartier,” an organization that sells inexpensive trees to residents with space, with the goal of beautifying and greenifying the area and
