La Succursale

Brewpub

There’s a new Brewpub in the city that rivals Dieu du Ciel. Yes, I said it. I didn’t say it’s better. I just said I like it a lot, and I’m picky about my brewpubs. Atmosphere and beer quality and selection are key. La Succursale makes its own delicious beers (6 of them, 4 of which were on the menu the day I went) and has a terrasse. Check. Check. It even has a little snack menu that kicks Dieu du Ciel’s behind. La Succursale isn’t out to compete, though, as 4 beers isn’t a lot, and the rest of the beer menu is actually made of mostly Dieu du Ciel beers, in addition to beer cocktails and sparkling ciders. Want a glass of something yeasty and bubbly to make the occasion feel a bit posher? They’ve got that. So it’s nowhere near being a neighbourhood dive. It’s sleek, sophisticated, but welcoming. It could definitely be a neighbourhood hangout, though, especially when the tasting quartet of the house-brewed options is so affordable. Something like $8.25 if I remember correctly. But I probably don’t, and I was too busy enjoying the terrasse on a beautiful afternoon to bother writing things down.

Most importantly, the beer is delicious. Did I mention that?

La Petite-Cote: A Kolsh-style German blonde

La Succursale: Amber, caramel-y

Blanche: The house blanche, my personal favourite

and the Angus IP “AAA”: IPA to the max – beefy, I guess, is an apt way to describe it

They also do a noir and a Radschlager amber, but I’ll have to go back for those. I’d go back anyway for the blanche, though. Or the amber. I’d also go back for the quality Dieu du Ciel offerings, as it’s easier to get a table in here (or a fussball table) with your pint than at the home of those other beers down on Laurier. The sparkling cider was refreshing, but I’m pretty sure that’s what gave me a headache, sitting out in the perfect Montreal terrasse weather. We didn’t snack, but there’s charcuterie and sausages done up a bit fancy. Cheese and things that are somewhat sophisticated.

Dieu du Ciel is a great place for a date or for hanging out with friends, and while this place is more leaning toward the hanging-out option since it’s a bit less cozy and intimate, you could still have good dates here. More importantly, you can have great lazy Sunday afternoons on the small terrasse. Show up early for a seat. Otherwise you’ll be stuck in the bay windows inside – prime bottom-perching real estate come Montreal winter months, and well-airconditioned for those suffocating days of summer. Plus contemporary art on the wall. Cold room and fermentation chamber in the basement. Gorgeous decor. The owners built everything themselves, including the elaborate bar. See pictures on the website. Half pints, tasting quartets, full pints. Average prices. Perfect happy hour location.

Yes, come here.

La Succursale

Where: 3188 rue Masson, Montreal

When: Mon-Tues 3pm-1am, Wed-Thurs 3pm-3am, Fri-Sat 1pm-3am, Sun 1pm-1am

How Much: Average half-pints (about $5 with a generous tip) and pints (more – Probably $8 or $9 depending on tipping). $8, I think, for the tasting quartet of 4 house-made beers.
